Ultrasound examinations are a safe, non-invasive way to look inside your pet’s body without surgery or discomfort. This advanced imaging technology helps us evaluate internal organs, fluid-filled structures, and other health concerns in real time.
At PetNest Animal Hospital, we use ultrasound to examine areas such as the abdomen, bladder, liver, kidneys, spleen, and other soft tissues. Unlike x-rays, ultrasound does not use radiation, making it a gentle diagnostic option for many pets.
Our goal is to provide clear answers quickly so we can diagnose problems accurately and recommend the best treatment plan for your pet’s health.

Yes, ultrasounds are very safe. They do not use radiation and are non-invasive. Your pet will experience little to no discomfort during the procedure.
During an ultrasound, your pet will lie on an examination table, and a handheld probe (transducer) will be moved over the area of interest. The transducer emits sound waves, creating images of your pet’s internal structures on a screen.
Sedation or anesthesia is generally not required for an ultrasound. However, if your pet is anxious or in pain, mild sedation may be used to keep them calm and still during the procedure.
Ultrasounds can diagnose a variety of conditions, including heart disease, liver and kidney disease, tumors, cysts, bladder stones, fluid accumulation, and gastrointestinal issues.
The duration of an ultrasound can vary depending on the complexity of the examination, but it typically takes 20 to 40 minutes. Additional time may be needed for preparation and to review the results.
In many cases, the ultrasound results will be discussed with you immediately after the procedure. If a specialist’s interpretation is needed, the final results may take a bit longer to receive.
